Paynesville is a rapidly aging coastal town in regional Gippsland. It currently is aiming to encourage a younger generation to move in and become a part of the local community, with a new multi-story development already underway. Despite this, rents are unfordable due to tourism rentals, which drive the cost of housing up for locals. In response to these challenges, the Generational Bay project offers an intergenerational living approach with both buy-in and affordable rental options. Each home is built to hold either a downsizing elderly person or a young family, and it is constructed to allow for post-construction self-build alteration and extensions.
